Investment Scams in Malaysia: How They Work and How to Stay Safe

By ScamAlert Editorial Team · Published 13 Jun 2026 · Updated 13 Jun 2026

Investment scams are the single largest source of scam losses in Malaysia. Victims are promised high, "guaranteed" returns through fake trading platforms, cryptocurrency schemes, forex robots, gold investments or pre-IPO share offers. The money often disappears the moment a "withdrawal" is requested.

How the scam works

Scammers advertise on social media, or add you to a WhatsApp/Telegram group led by a "mentor" or "analyst". Early on, a small test withdrawal succeeds to build trust. You are then encouraged to invest more. When you try to cash out a large balance, you are told to pay "tax", "fees" or "margin" first — money that is never returned, because the profits on screen were never real.

Warning signs

  • Promises of fixed or guaranteed daily/weekly returns with "no risk".
  • Pressure to act fast or invest more to "unlock" higher tiers.
  • An app or website you were sent a link to, not one you found independently.
  • Payments to personal or company bank accounts, or to crypto wallets.
  • You are asked to pay fees before you can withdraw.

How to protect yourself

  • Check the company against Bank Negara Malaysia's Financial Consumer Alert list and the Securities Commission's Investor Alert list.
  • Verify the bank account and phone number on PDRM Semak Mule (semakmule.rmp.gov.my) before paying anyone.
  • Remember: real, licensed investments never guarantee returns and never need you to pay a fee to withdraw your own money.
  • Be sceptical of "mentors" in chat groups — the other "happy investors" are often part of the scam.

If you have already invested

Stop all further payments immediately and do not pay any "release" fee. Call the National Scam Response Centre at 997 as soon as possible — acting within the first hours gives the best chance of freezing the funds. Keep every screenshot, receipt and chat record for your police report.
